She’s like, “Thanks, Mom. I just got the letter. I was going to tell you.” Oh, God. A little bit of a longer drive. Yeah, I can make that. I didn’t know that. The mom’s smile on top of it. Mhm. That child’s got too much spirit for a girl of her circumstance. No, he’s just son of love. Trouble is what it is. Is it that mom looks evil? Yeah. She looks like she’s going to try and muck things. Sabotage turn. Yeah. Do you want to go somewhere? Okay. God, this looks like the beginning of it or something. Yeah, right. Jeez. The murder house down the street. But it’s romantic. It’s romantic. I want a big old porch that wraps around the entire house. I love that. Drink tea and watch the sun go down. Keep taking notes. Mhm. Okay. I can make all that happen. You promise? Mhm. Where you going? In here. This house is older than the Declaration of Independence. Be careful, please. [Music] That does not sound like happy music. No, it does not. Nice. Thank God you all right? Sir, it’s really not her fault. I lost track of time. Sit down. Oh boy. Oh god. She is out fooling around with that boy till 2:00 in the morning and it has got to stop. He’s a nice boy, but he’s he’s what? He is trash. Trash. I I knew trash was coming. Now that is enough. You are not to see him anymore. And that’s final. No, it’s not final. You’re not going to tell me who I’m going to love. Now, Teddy, I love him. be not suitable for you, baby. You know, as much as I disagree with them, I love the dad’s disposition cuz it completely caught me off guard. Yeah, I love him. You are 17 years old. You don’t know anything about love. Oh, and you do? You don’t look at daddy the way I look at Noah. Look, it’s it’s been a minute, okay? We’ve been around each other for a while. You leave it. Yeah, that hurts. Yeah, your parents said some really mean things about me. Yeah, I’m humiliated. It’s all right. No, it’s not. Yeah. No, that sucks. Oh, that hurts my heart. Yeah, man. But you’re going to have a million things to do. You got so much ahead of you. Don’t talk like that. It’s true. Oh, God. I don’t have to go to school. Okay. I can stay here. No. Do you see? That’s exactly what I’m talking about. And you can come with me. And this is what your parents are afraid of. To New York? Yes. What am I going to do in New York? Anything. Anything. You You’ve got manual labor skills. [Music] Yeah. Oh god. I guess he he’s broken up cuz he feel like the parents are right. Yeah. We’ll finish out the summer and we’ll see what happens. Finish out the summer. You saying you want to break off? I’m saying we’ll see how it goes later on. That basically is a death sentence. Are you breaking up with me? I don’t see how it’s going to work. I mean, he’s saying what everyone else is kind of thinking. Oh, hell. Well, if you’re going to do it, why don’t you just do it right now? She shoves him a lot. She does. Whether she’s happy with him. Oh my god. Do it now. Do it. You know what? I’m going to do it. It’s over. Okay. It’s over. Damn. Don’t touch me. I hate you. I hate you. You don’t mean that. Yeah, you don’t mean that. Don’t leave. He’s like, I’m working on it. Oh, no. Just wait a minute. We’re not really breaking apart. Oh god. The immediate heel turn. She’s like, we’re just having a fight, right? This is just a fight, right? I love the way she performed that. It was She did great. Ally woke up to find her completely changed. This house looks like a museum. What’s going on? Is dad leaving? Did she just like, “Oh, never mind.” They’re like, “We’re taking you away from this relationship. Come and have some breakfast, dear. Willow, we’ll pack your things.” No heads up, no nothing. I don’t want you to pack my things. I don’t want you to touch my stuff. She’s like, “I’m like exit stage left.” Uhhuh. You are going whether you like it or not. Now, even if Aaron has to throw you over his shoulder and drag you the whole way, you’re going. Damn, she is cruel. Yeah, but she’s like, we’re I’m ending this relationship one way or another before it results in something life-changing. Where’s Noah? Have to live in a loaf. Followed her to the Lumberyard. Okay. Can you just Can you just tell him that I love him then? Can’t do that. I’ll tell. That’s a lie. That’s a boldfaced lie. She was trying. She was She was fighting to hold on. Okay. Oh, he’s he’s actually telling him. He’s like, “No, I got to go. I’m out of here. There’s no way you catch up. You going to drive to New York?” Oh, no. Summer romances end for all kinds of reasons. Oh. But when all is said and done, they have one thing in common. They are shooting stars. A spectacular moment of light in the heavens. Ryan Gosling’s sad face is so believable. Hurt so bad. It is ridiculously believable. He wrote to Ally that he was sorry and stupid for breaking up with her. And then mom’s going to get rid of the letters. He wrote one letter a day for a year. 365 letters. Hey, Fred. Nothing. Sorry. Why can’t characters be like, “Yo, this is sus.” Yeah. After a year of silence, he decided to put it all behind and start a new life. A So he wrote a farewell letter and he and Finn packed their bags and headed for Atlanta. Doing more work. A state of war. Oh, is he going to war? Between the United States and the Constitution of the United States. Wow. He’s going to war. [Music] Oh no. I was about to say Finn better make it out of this. Oh no. Oh no. Damn. Oh man. This dude’s going through everything. Jesus. [Music] Meanwhile, she’s just at college. Ally was in her third year of college when she volunteered as a nurse’s aid. Let’s just get you better and we’ll talk about a date. Okay. A got to do what you can to keep your morale up. You got to load in. There’s that dude again. Oh yeah, he’s doing all right. What’s he doing here? Staring at I wonder who he could be looking for. Oh, miss. I’m all better. Now, how’s about that date? He’s looking real good for how rough he was looking before. He’s healed. Surprised how quickly she fell in love with Lana. Oh no. You know, all we got to do is rent a uniform, hang out at a Starbucks, and wait. Mom loves him. I hate mom. I hate mom so hard. Your mom and dad. See, thank you for that. Yeah. See, the problem is is that they love me. I’m exactly the kind of man that they want you to end up with. I’m I’m He’s a very astute. I’m observer. You know, I’m incredible dancer. I’m a really smart guy. You know, very gag. She’s like, “Tell me something I don’t know. If you marry me, then you will have lost a lifelong battle of defiance against it. Oh my goodness. What are we going to do? Oh. Oh no. Your parents will always know the unhappiness that you feel for not being able to disappoint. Well, you see, you have to get their permission first. Ah, I think you may have overestimated their affection for you. Is that right? I don’t think so. We shall see. But you should probably warn them about the blue hedgehog you have living with you. Oh, cuz I asked him already and they said yes. What? Oh, he already got permission. That took me a second to reprocess. Oh, what the Oh my god, he’s already got the ring. Will you marry me? I Wow. That kid around a lot, but I’m crazy about you. He had the game plan and everything. Marry me. Make me the happiest man in the world. This is all mom’s evil doing. Yeah. Mom and dad are like, “Oh, good. They finally he he did it.” Where you going? Is he about to jump on stage and get grab the mic? Excuse me. I’d like everyone here to know that this young lady and I are getting married. [Applause] Nice. Now, don’t interrupt the show anymore. Yeah. Yeah. Get off my stage. Why? At the very moment she said yes, Noah’s face came to her mind. Oh. Oh. Cuz he’s not the one you’re meant for. Noah is. Noah made it back though. Oh, good to see you. Let me see you. You bleeding anywhere? No. Can I do the check? Gosh, I can’t even imagine, dude. Like before before the internet. Yeah. Right. And like being able to just like call or get updates or anything from across the world. Exactly. Here. I sold the house. No, you sold the house. Yeah. Why? Between that and your GI bill, you ought to be able to get it now. Get what? Your dream house. The farm. The the house. Uh, Dad. God, don’t dad me. I don’t want to hear about it. I already talked to the bank. They’re going to give you the loan. Where are you going? He’s like, “Build me a room in the house.” Yeah. Make it happen. You sell the house. Where you going to live? With you, dummy. What do you think? Good. Good. I’m glad that’s the plan. You’re going to need some help. The fact that that thing is still holding up is Oh my god. Crazy. A He’s gonna make the blue shutters right there to fulfill his lifelong dream. He would rebuild the old house from the ground up. Wow. And when Noah went to Charleston to get his building plans approved, fate stepped in. What does he see her on the street? Oh my god. No way. Stop the goddamn bus. Stop the bus. Stop the bus. Stop the bus. Sorry, Mac. I can’t stop the bus till I get to the deeper. Please stop the bus now. Please. You understand English, pal? No. Stop the bus. I’m about to hit the brakes for you. Oh my god. Tuck and roll. Okay, he slowed down enough. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Thank God. Ah, another delightful brunch spot full of rich folks who will gossip. baby. Oh god, that would just destroy me. And he hasn’t gotten letters the entire year. So he’s like, “Oh, she moved on immediately.” And all he has to go off of is his buddy telling him she stopped by and said she loved him. Oh god, that’s heartbreaking. That would just destroy me. What do you do? After seeing Ally that day, something inside Noah snapped. He got the notion into his head that if he restored the old house where they had come that night, I guess some called it a labor of love, others called it something else. Seems crazy. Yeah. Yeah. Kind of like everything into the house. Yeah. Do they ever see each other again? Noah and Ally, don’t jump the gun lady. Yeah. Let me tell the story. The story before I get to the good part, do you? Where did I leave off? She’s like, I don’t trust you. This is like no. Oh my god. His father died in November. The house was all he had. Damn. His dad didn’t even get to see it finished. Damn. Ain’t that the truth, though? Yeah, right. Like often. That’s just kind of how it goes. It sucks. Wow. He’s making it look nice though. Smile. Here we go. Wow. He took a good look at what he had accomplished. Place is gorgeous. I love that he smiled after the photo was taken. Seriously about setting it on fire and finally put the house up for sale. I’m prepared to offer you this much. Put the house up for sale. But he always found a reason not to sell it, too. No. $50,000. That’s more than my asking price. That’s right. It’s a great deal more. What the hell? No one in his right mind would do that. and he wouldn’t have a lunatic living in his house. Wouldn’t have a lunatic living in his house. I mean, I suppose he’s crazy, but like why why have it? And in the evenings, to temper the sting of loneliness, there was Martha Shaw. Martha was a war widow who lived in Quail Ridge, a town away. And it’s not what he wants. What do you want, Noah? No, it’s not what, it’s whom? What do you mean what I want from me? That’s a good question. Sometimes when you talk to me, you don’t even see me. Poor woman. I know, right? But a woman knows when a man looks into her eyes and sees someone. God. Now you know I want to give you all the things that you want. I think she knows you don’t. But I can’t because they’re gone. They’re broken. Damn. All right, man. If he’d gone in there and talked to her when he saw her, she might have just broken off the engagement right there. That’s true. I didn’t even think about that. But but he doesn’t know. She looked happy. Is a veil too much? Are you kidding? You look perfect. The dead silence when they revealed it. Gorgeous, honey. He’s in the newspaper. Oh my god. He fixed up the house. Immediately the mom knew. Immediately the mom was like, “She’s in the bath with the veil. That’s a hell of a tub. That’s nice. What are we doing? What are you doing? We are walking with a purpose. Well, hello, baby. I didn’t know you were coming. I’m so sorry. I should have called. Baby, what are you talking about? You don’t have to call. Is she about to break it off? She hasn’t even gotten to see him yet. So, what’s up? I don’t anymore. Oh. Oh, she doesn’t have joy. Yeah, she doesn’t have the thing. I didn’t know that. Yeah. Yeah, that’s the problem. So, paint. Simply put, problem solved. I’m going to start. Great. He This is some code word that he doesn’t know. Uh-huh. He’s not getting it. I need to get away. Okay. I need to take care of a few things. Uhhuh. Okay. Should I be worried? No, I don’t think so. Just tell him he’s not kid enough. Yeah. No. Listen. Are you all right? Yeah. Okay, then go. Oh, God. Take your time. Do whatever you need to do. This dude is so understanding. He’s so understanding and a good dude. This this false assurances thing. Oh, I’m going to be back from Seabbrook in a couple of days. Okay. Sebrook. From where? Yeah. See, Brooke, I’d be worried. Yeah. Admittedly, like I’ I’d be kind of freaking out a little bit, especially if we’re engaged. Yeah. I’d be like, “What’s happening?” But I guess maybe he’s like, “Okay, she’s nervous or something.” He’s like, “Is this real?” It worked. Hello. He’s like, “I got to stop drinking in the morning. I saw your picture in the paper, the one with you in the house, and I just want to Are you Are you okay? Really the person I think you are. So, are you okay? [Laughter] She’s like, I got to get out of here, woman. I shouldn’t have stop her. Stop her. [Music] I was about to say, “Well, at least she learned how to drive.” Nope. [Laughter] Oh my god. You want to come in? And that’s where we leave off. I think I’ve heard it before. Yes. Oh, God. Doctor needs to see you. Me now? No, him. But he hasn’t finished reading the story. Oh god. Is Does he like Is he not doing as hot as he seems? While you wait, maybe you like to play the piano for a few minutes. You do like that. I do. Mhm. Wow. What a state of mind to be in. Does she also like painting? Okay. So, I see here that you’ve had two heart attacks over the last 18 months. Okay. Any complications? Nope. Feel fine. Okay. Deep breath for me. It’s a very man response. Yeah. Objectively, yes. Terrific. Terrific. You still taking your medication? Every day. Twice a day. They don’t let me get away with it. Science goes only so far. And then comes God. Damn. They forgot to turn the page for you. Through with me. He’s like, I got to I got to go help. Wait, she’s remembering. It’s the song that she played on the out of tune piano. I guess they flipped that page. No, that she’s playing by memory. Take that. Take that, doc. Exactly. Ham and cotton. As in ham and cotton. Well, your parents must love him. You love him? Yeah, I do. Why are you here? I love him very much. He’s like, damn it, that hurts. Are you hungry? You want to stay for dinner? Oh, man. You can drink like a sailor. Yeah, right. Knocking it back. Couple more of these and you’re going to be carrying me right out of here. Well, you can go slow then. I don’t want to have to take advantage of you. I’m a married woman. Not yet. No, not yet. That’s a hell of a rock. Oh my god. What? Why are you looking at me like that? Cuz I want to take that ring off and throw it across the room. It’s memories. This is the room. Mhm. It is. This room. This That’s where we put the dining table. This room. This is This is it. He put the dining table right there. I’m full. Me, too. I love that he’s like not trying hard. No. I mean, outside of rebuilding the house and the restoring the Yeah, right. trying hard. Jesus. Goodbye. You good to drive? I saw what you did to do that fence sober. Do you think you could come back tomorrow morning? There’s some place I’d like to show you. Oh god. Okay. His ability to be calm and just be like, “Okay, is remarkable.” Oh, I do wish I could figure out the end of this story. The children are here. Children, not yours. His his children. Do you mind? Oh, I’ I’d love to meet them. I feel like they’re your kids. Hi. All right. Maggie. Maggie. How are you? Hello there, honey. Oh, God. Oh. Oh, and who’s this? Edmond. Hi, Edmond. They are her kids. She doesn’t remember them. You know, I think I’ll run on up and take my afternoon nap, right? Oh, God. I’ll read some more later. All right. Thank you. I’m so happy to meet y’all. You know them. Those are your kids. Oh god. Oh god. Daddy, come home. Mama doesn’t know us. She doesn’t recognize you. We miss you. This is crazy. You live in here? Yeah. He’s just staying at the senior center to be with her. This is my home now. Oh, your mother is my home. Hello. Hey there. Hi. Why do you sound out of breath? It’s Lawn. Who are you expecting? Uh, nobody. I I just I’m just surprised. How How did you find me when you didn’t call? I got worried. Where have you been? You all right? He’s so calm. He is. You know, I feel like an idiot cuz I called your hotel about 100 times. I’m fine. Anything you want to tell me? Yeah. What’s going on? Nope. Okay. The silence. Uh-huh. Something’s wrong. Mom, I love you. Call you tomorrow. Okay. He knows. Yeah, he knows. He can just feel it in his bow and something’s off. Something’s a miss. Yep. He doesn’t even spend time in the house. He’s just in the workshop the whole time. He’s making all the furniture for the house. That’s incredible. Like that’s from the ground up. Well, we better get going. The rain’s coming in. Oh, that is so cool. Oh my god. Yeah. And he knows like all the best places to go cuz he’s out here on this river day in day out. They’re different. What do you mean? It’s the way you look. He is Kenaf. You look different, too. But God in a good way. You’re kind of the same, though. Mhm. Oh, yeah. Yeah. In a good way, bad way. The house. It’s beautiful what you did. Would you like to see your painting studio? Well, I promised you I would. Oh gosh. Oh, here comes the rain. Great. We got to go. Uh-oh. The colors are changing. Yeah, storm clouds are rolling in. [Music] I’d be worried being out on the water if there was like lightning. Yeah, for real. Oh god. But isn’t it perfect? Come on. Sorry. Yeah, like that little scarf is going to do much. At that point, I’m going to need you to start bailing cuz we’re going to start taking on water. We haven’t seen her hit her fiance one time. Nope. You’re right. She has not physically assaulted her fianceรฉ. Exactly. I mean, she doesn’t love him. It can’t be love. Jesus. God, I love this beautiful romantic moment, but we got to get off the water. Don’t slip now. Okay, good. Damn. All in one fell swoop. Why didn’t you write me? Why? I did. I waited for you for seven years. God. I wrote you 365 letters. You wrote me. Yes. Yes. Yes, I did. Wasn’t over. Still isn’t over. Oh yeah. Oh my god. Just go for it. It’s been waiting almost a decade for the dining room table. Who needs a gym membership when you’re building a house? All this time, that’s what I’ve been missing. Yeah. You’ve never had it like that before, have you? Let’s do it again. Let’s do it again. He’s out. I mean, honestly, I would be, too. Don’t even blame him. You’re trying to kill me. She’s like, I waited seven years for this. I’m getting as much of it as possible. I need rest. [Laughter] What do you want? Um, some pancakes. Hell yeah. Let’s go. Pancakes. I can go for some pancakes. Oh [ย __ย ] Uhoh. Who’s out there? Oh god. Not the other woman. It’s okay. She’s She’s got a fiance. Yikes. How does that make it better? No, no, no. What I’m saying is like she has less to be mad about at him for like potentially trying to move on because she’s also like supposed to be being married here soon. Hi. She’s the one, isn’t she? How did she know? The car’s out front. Can I meet her? I’d really like to meet her. I don’t know if that’s a good idea, Martha. So, this is Martha. Oh, well, I’ve heard a lot about you. I’ve heard a lot about you, too. Unfortunately, you want to come in? Oh my god. Not particularly. No. No. I was just saying how hungry it was. And you know, you This is so weird. Wow. Yeah. She’s just being genuinely jovial about this. Right. Like I I I have no control over this situation. His face. He’s like, “Oh my god, I would not want to walk back in that house.” No. He’s like, “I’ll be in the workshop. Nice to meet you, too. Bye.” Oh my god, she stayed for ages. Well, I guess she’s so charming. Yeah, it’s hard to resist her. She’s sensational. She really is. You’re telling me. I’m really glad that I came, Noah. I feel bad for this woman. For the first time since I lost Richard, I feel like I’ve got something to look forward to. A She’s like, “You get one.” He’s laughing. Why is he laughing? I I feel like it’s just like the part of me is like, “It’s the tombstones.” Awkward situation. You don’t know what to do. You just start smiling and laughing. I get hit with that all the time. It’s the worst. That’s sweet. Didn’t she say she’d be back from Seabbze in a couple of days? Is it Seab Breeze or Sebrook? Sebrook. It is Seabbrook. You’re right. Oh my gosh. He set this up while she was asleep. Follow the arrows. My god. He cut out a bunch of paper arrows. The painting studio. Oh, dang. That’s what you came for. Uh-huh. If I could have access to internet, I would totally live in a place like that. Let’s take a drive. Why would I want to go anywhere with you? Because I might know you a little better than you think. Oh. So, did mom also have a summer romance? Have a Noah. Have a Noah. Are we about to point him out? Do you see that man there? Oh my god. Yeah, mama did. That guy’s Burly. Doesn’t look like it now, but 25 years ago. He was a smoke show. We were out of our minds in love, let me tell you. Or did she pick a random dude? I don’t think so. Your grandfather was furious, so we decided to run away. So why do the same thing to her? Yeah. We didn’t even make the next town before the police picked us up. Oh, wow. You know, sometimes when I’m in the area, stop here and I’ll watch you. [Applause] Trying to picture how different my life might have been. That would have been fundamentally different. Yeah, fundamentally different. But like you’re trying to use this as an example of swaying her away. And I’m certain she’s listening to this and being like, “Mom, just let me do this thing.” I want you to know that I love your father. No. God damn it. This is important. You need to hear it. I do. I’m surprised none of that. He is a wonderful man. Notice that. Uh-huh. Yeah. I guess cars just come in and out. Don’t even know who that person is. [Music] Quick drive away before he comes over. Yeah, right. Get out of here. She could have the love and life that you didn’t. And look at this house. I know. It’s beautiful. Like the other guy may not have been able to provide you like a home like this, but this place is stunning. It and it’s peaceful. It’s tranquil. It’s tranquil. Oh my god. Does she have them? She has them. Oh my god. 365. 66. Because there was a goodbye letter. I hope you make the right choice. Well, I feel like you made it for her. Yeah. Blond’s here in town. He’s here. unfazed. What are you gonna do, Al? I don’t know. What about the past couple of days? They happen. You know, I know that they happen and they were wonderful, but they were also very irresponsible. So, you make love to me and then you go back to your husband. Was that a test that I didn’t pass? I made a promise to a man. He gave me a ring and I gave him my word and your word is shot to him. That Yes. He’s like, “Yeah, oops.” It’s about security. What is that supposed to mean? Money. What are you? He’s got a lot of money. Now I hate you. Now I hate you. Did you just stay with me? Stay with you? What for? Look at us. We’re already fighting. Well, that’s what we do. Yeah. He’s passionate. An arrogant son of a [ย __ย ] And I tell you when you’re being a pain in the ass. 99% of the time. 99. It’s worth it. They have like a two second rebound rate and you’re back doing the next pain in the ass. Two second rebound rate and we’re going to have to work at this every day. But I want to do that because I want you. That’s what a relationship is. 30 years from now, 40 years from now, what’s it look like? You’re going to look like your mom. If it’s with that guy, go. I lost you once. I think I could do it again. Yeah. Hey, no matter what I do, somebody gets hurt. Would you stop thinking about what everyone wants? Got to break a few eggs. It’s not that simple. What do you want? Just tell me I have to go. Do what you do best, man. Just let her go. Yeah, she’ll come back. That’s so hard. Yeah, I don’t think you should be crying and driving at the same time. Oh my god. Oh, no. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Yeah, your life just flashed before your eyes. What? What? What decision are we making? Oh, my dearest Ally couldn’t sleep last night because Oh, she read the last one between us. The goodbye letter. Oh, and if in some distant place in the future, we see each other in our new lives. The best love is kind that we all eyes all red and puffy that makes us reach for more. That plants a fire in our hearts and brings peace to our mind. Get yourself together. Yeah. Fix the hair. It’s a beautiful story. Yes, it is. I don’t know why, but it makes me feel sad. Well, that’s sad. Nothing is ever lost or can be lost. The body sluggish, aged, cold, the embers left. He’s reading poetry or reciting poetry. Did you write that? No. Whitman. That was Walt Whitman. Yep. I think I knew him. I think you did. Oh, shall we go in? I’m feeling a little chilly. Thank you. I love this environment. It’s beautiful. Well, who did all of this? I did with a little help from my friends on the nursing staff. Oh, he likes a So, what happened? She’s like, I got to know the end in the story. Which one did you choose? Okay. Oh, God. The way I see it, I got three choices. One, I can shoot him. Two, I can kick the crap out of him. What’s that going to get you? I leave you. I’m not looking to pick a fight. Oh, that’s no good. You see, cuz none of those options get me in spite of everything. I love you. Oh my god. He’s too good. Exactly. Come on. I meant what I said when I gave you that ring. I did too. The level of understanding is god mode. And when I’m with you, I feel like someone totally different. Oh, God. It’s normal not to forget your first love. Like, it’s so hard because he’s so nice and understanding and objectively a good dude for her. Yeah. Convince my fiance that she should be with me. You don’t have to. I already know I should be with you. And they lived happily ever after. What? Who did? No way. [Music] Thank God. [Music] I was about to be so mad. I remember now. It was us. Yep. It was us. Darling, what happened to me? Nothing. You just went away for a little while. But I got you back. How much time do we have? I’m not sure. Oh, last time it was no more than 5 minutes. Oh my god. Are the children? Oh, they’re fine. Ah, they were here today. Oh, God. Will you tell them I love them? Of course. A I’m sorry. I’ll tell them, sweetheart. Oh, and they just have this brief moment of clarity. Do you think that I could be her tonight? Would you be all right? A maybe we could get a car. We could go for a ride. We could get out of here and just go someplace. A not tonight, darling. Come on. Why not? Wait. Why did you call me, darling? God, no. Oh, God. No. No. Lee, sweetheart. Hey, Ally, I love you. Stay with me. Don’t [Music] Who are you? Oh god. Help. Oh gosh. Calm down. Oh gosh. It’s all right. Calm down. Calm down. Calm down. Oh god. Calm down. Come on. Calm down. Calm down. Oh, take a look. Let’s take a look. fine. Just breathe. The doctor’s over here like, “This is what I was saying.” Yeah. All the family photos. Oh, God. She wrote it herself. God. Morning, Mr. Cowhon. I was going to say that’s not the way we end it, right, Mr. Cowhoon. Oh, God. You got to be kidding me. It’s all right now. Come on. Come on, precious. Yes. Come on. Let’s go. It’s okay, baby. Come on, Mr. Holmes. [Music] How do you feel? Fine. Fiddle is fiddle. Where you going? A bit of fiddle. Yeah, right. Just taking a walk. You were going to see Miss Ally? Yes. She thinks I just got out of the hospital. I miss her. I’m going to go downstairs and get myself a cup of coffee. Mhm. Yep. I won’t be back to check on you for a while. So, don’t do anything foolish. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink. Take the note. She’s got plenty of coffee. Yeah, she’s got loads of coffee there. It’s like, come on. Okie dokie. Here we go. Hi. Hey. No. Oh, I’m sorry I haven’t been able to be here to read to you. I didn’t know what to do. I was afraid you’re never coming back. A always come back. Oh, God. When I can’t remember anything anymore, what will you do? I’m not going to let that happen. I’ll be here. I’ll never leave you. Oh, God. Do you think that our love can create miracles? Yes. Yeah. Yeah. You’re remembering that’s a miracle in itself. That’s what brings you back to me each time. Do you think our love could take us away together? Oh gosh. I think our love can do anything we want it to. Yes. Yeah. Stay with her. Cozy up. Cozy up. Good night. Good night. That’s a battle. Yeah, I’ll be seeing you. A, [Music] they’re both gone. Yep. Yep. [Music] Oh my god. [Music] Oh. [Music] Oh, we’re birds. We’re birds. That’s what that Oh, [ย __ย ] Damn. Damn. That was incredible. Again, shocked. I haven’t seen it before, but I I absolutely understand why everybody talks about it as like the be all end all romance movie. And it’s not long. You know, like I mean objectively like the run time is closer to two hours, but like the story doesn’t cover a long period of time. No. You know, I kind of went into it expecting like this constant will they won’t they will they won’t they will they won’t they, you know, a bit more conflict of like them being together and maybe more time spent together and and finding each other in different times of life. But it it really is just like it’s the summer. It’s them being apart and then it’s them coming back together. And it’s so simple and like short and just like it’s basically two encounters, but the interweaving and the slow reveal of like them being the old people and having been together forever and him trying to get her to remember is so heartbreaking and sweet and sweet at the same time. Like he is moving heaven and earth for these fiveinut periods. 5 minutes of her remembering who she is. Yeah. Like hours upon hours upon hours just to bring her back for a little bit. Uh-huh. And like reading with her and patience and not overwhelming her with information, right? Like he’s not he’s not constantly being like, “No, you remember these are your kids. No, you remember this is our lives. No, you remember these things.” Right? because that can that can be very overwhelming for for patients with dementia. It can it can be very well a confusing because they can’t remember and then it’s panic inducing because they’re being told things that they can’t remember. And so he’s just treating her as like oh a friend of mine that I’m reading to and the patience to be able to introduce your kids, both of your kids to her as these are my kids and grandkids. And like that moment where the little kid comes in and hugs her like like that’s grandma and you can tell that like he doesn’t totally get the memo. Yeah. They did that so beautifully and so painfully watching this uh older is different. Yeah. I got to say like I’ll bet, you know, cuz I saw it when I was a little kid and I’m like just mad at the movie. I was so mad. I was like, especially the the part the part that offended me I still am on the fence about is uh is what’s his name from Sonic the Hedgehog? Um James Marsden. Yeah, James Mars. The word Marsden kept popping into my brain, but I’m like I don’t know his whole name. James Marzipan. Anyway, his reaction, I was able to watch it with the with the subtleties in mind because, you know, he’s you can see he’s he’s been like mulling this [ย __ย ] over and he’s been like just dealing with the fact that his woman did what she did and and like she cheated on him and he’s like, “God, like I could do this. I could do this. I could.” And he’s been like repeatedly going through it. But the part that bothered me was how he’s like, “But I just love you so darn much. Like I none of these options give me you.” Yeah. I’m like, are you kidding? In 1950, whatever, like or close to 1950, I can’t I had the hardest time imagining a guy could be that understanding in that pocket of time, you know, to the point where it’s like his woman cheated on him, his fianceรฉ cheated on him, and he’s just like, well, I want to be with you, though, and so I’m going to smile through this. Right. Well, I mean, that’s what I had. But the thing is, the whole film showed you that he is just like he’s that dude, though. He’s really sweet through and through and very genuine and an awesome dude and I really kept waiting for the other shoe to drop on him and you know him to reveal that he’s awful. But I think that’s the brilliance the brilliance of this movie is it avoids the trope of being like oh you have the one guy and then you have the one you’re meant to be with and the other guy makes it so you have no choice but to realize you’re meant to be with this guy. Yeah. It was more painful this way. Exactly. cuz I I when I first saw it, I wanted him to go full on Billy Zayn. Yeah. Titanic. Like I wanted him to pull out his gun. Not not necessarily that I’m I’m being facitious, but like I just wanted him to like be mad and he just wasn’t. I’m like how I’d be mad. I’d be hurt. I’d be so hurt. I’d be mad, you know? And I think that’s just a human response to that, you know. Um, but anyway, the movie as a whole was was I there are so many things that I see it I see now I’m like, “Oh my god, this is so actually this is a very very compelling film. It’s very well done. It’s well shot. The acting is on point. Phenomenal.” Um, like I have a new appreciation of Ryan Gosling’s performance in this that I didn’t before. He does such a good job at the subtle like just unfazed, right? because you can still see a lot going on in his face and a lot going on behind his eyes even though his facial expression really doesn’t change that much. Yeah. You know, and so his performance and the ability to bring that subtlety there and we still get like that depth of emotion and that hurt from him after she’s gone and things like that blew me away. The one emotional moment that I feel like was shorted in this was the death of his friend in World War II. Yeah. I feel like we really were just like gone. That came and went real quick, but I I honestly didn’t have much of a connection to him. So, Brian Gosling has this thing that I I actually just coined it at one point. I just called it the Ryan Gosling effect cuz he does such a he he’s so confident in stillness that you sort of just project onto him whatever it is that you think he’s feeling and it’s sort of this weird genius move because all he has to do is hold still in the moment and you you get it like you’re immediately like I know exactly what this man is feeling. I I can paint pictures with just that one facial expression. I mean, and alternately, you can call it the Neo effect because when you watch The Matrix, Kiana Reeves doesn’t do a heck of a lot, right? You’re projecting yourself onto him when you’re watching. Yeah. And so, I think that he does that. He He did it so well though because here I actually liked his performance better than I’ve seen him elsewhere because it wasn’t just that. It’s like he he had more going on. Very subtle expressions that felt just like a person, you know, like a real person in the situation, you know, the confusion, whatever it might be, the the him being enamored, whatever it is. I’ve I really And again, this is like driving the nail home of you being like, “This is Michael’s movie.” His the way he interacted with her when she was like yelling and screaming at him or when she was asking, “What are you thinking?” or any sort of like probing his brain of the just kind of silent staring. Yes, I relate to that so hard because there there’s a lot of times where, you know, my wife or really anybody is like, “What are you thinking? Where’s your head at?” And I have to sit and go, “What am I thinking right now?” Like, I have to kind of codify. And so, it results in me just kind of being quiet for a while, which is deeply frustrating when you’re having an emotional moment and you want an emotional response from your partner. And I just have to be like, “I don’t really know where I’m at. you asking me that has kind of left me at a loss for words now. So, I don’t know how to continue this the like the the conversation we’ve been having because I just I don’t know. And so, watching him, especially when they were fighting, have those moments of just like I don’t know what to tell you. I’m just going to let you yell at me. I felt that in a big way. But it it’s also, you know, we finally get an explosion out of him when, you know, she comes back and her mom drops her off with the letters. Yeah. And she’s like, “I have a fiance to go back to.” And he finally is like, “No, I’m going to speak my mind. I’m going to tell you exactly how I’m feeling. I’m done like chasing my thoughts and trying to find the words to use them. I’m just going to let him run.” Yeah. And I think that is such an important moment for their relationship because he’s finally like actively rather than doing what’s best. Yeah. I mean, it’s obviously this is escapism in a sorrowful way, right? Um but just to see the the level of legendary love on display, it’s like his love is bigger than earth itself, you know, and his patience is bigger than earth itself. to be able to do all that for this person that he’s he once he saw her, he just never stopped loving her. No. And it’s that simple. I also felt bad for the for the other woman when I was a kid. I’m my nose. Like once you get me crying, like I’m just a mess. Um I felt bad for that other woman who is like just she’s just there to keep the bed warm. Even the way it was phrased bothered me when I was a kid cuz I’m just like that sucks for her ass. It does. And I think that I mean that’s part of why she’s there is like just sitting there and watching him toil over the fact that he’s still not over this woman and she wants something from him, but she’s also desperate enough for that connection that she’s willing to overlook the fact that she’s not getting everything out of it. Yeah. I just I guess I feel bad for the collateral damage in the toxicity of these two. You know what? Maybe maybe James Marston’s character can find her and they can reunite and live happily ever after as the as each other’s rebounds. Okay. Oh, the Oh, gotcha. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. They should have been introduced to each other. Yeah, that would have been convenient. That would have been something. But James Marson’s got some getting over to do, I think, unfortunately cuz he just got freshly broken up with and she left being like, I get it. I understand. Also in that era, I think that maybe I could be wrong, but in that era, it would be hard for a widow to find someone else. Like any any woman, well, I guess divorce is just like a huge thing. And that really kind of that point was uh uh there’s a movie called Walk the Line that is Johnny Cash’s movie, right? And there’s a woman in there who played by Reese Witherspoon who gets divorced at a certain point and that stains her reputation and it’s like it’s after this era. Yeah. you know, and so a woman who’s gone through stuff like that, it’s like it stays with you. Well, yeah, but she’s got the benefit of like her husband died at war, right? Like she didn’t get divorced. So like that’s that’s a little bit more acceptable. I mean, like people, you know, it used to be the common thing of like, oh, she’s a young widow, she better get married here quick, you know, that whole n yard. So there’s I think socially she has more mobility than a woman who had gotten divorced and things like that. And but James Marsden is like he’s a he’s a military dude who’s handsome and very sweet. I feel like he’ll be okay. Yeah, he’s going to be fine. And he’s also he also has tons of money. Lots of money. I feel like he’s going to be fine. Uh I do kind of wish we got a little bit of a excerpt about him just cuz it’s like I I ended up caring about his character as well. Like it’d be nice to know where that went. You know, I they almost got me with the like end of they lived happily ever after and trying to convince me that she did choose James Marsden over um Ryan Gosling, Noah, I guess, because her son or their son when they were introducing them at at the old folks home looked so much like James Mars’s character. Okay. He had the same like dark hair, sllicked back, like kind of didn’t look like Ryan Gosling. And I realized that they weren’t casting Ryan Gosling and um what’s her name? The girl Rachel. Rachel McAdams. Um they weren’t using them as actual one to one young, right? Because when they’re going through the family photos, it’s actual young photos of the two of the old folks, I believe. Um so it’s all like, you know, kind of dream escapism. So it that means nothing as far as like genetic pass down goes. But I was looking at him and he was kind of awkward about it and I was like, “Is that their kid? Did they have another kid? Did she have a kid with him in that marriage and only then did she realize that she loved Noah and came back to him and that’s why he’s a little more awkward?” No, it’s just him. How I Met Your Mother kind of. Um, so I I was this close to being convinced, but just based off of the kid, but yeah, I’m glad they ended up together properly. Yeah, them dying together, holding hands is just like the sweetest, most sappy, most uh uh saccharine but beautiful, achingly beautiful thing. It’s like it’s all the things at once cuz it’s like there’s a part of my brain that goes that would never happen. But at the same time, I’m like that’s beautiful though. It’s gorgeous. We we can only dream, you know, of of not being left alone by the person that we love the most, right? you know, right? I mean, there’s always that saying of like, you know, you go alone. It’s like, but here they didn’t. They didn’t. They went together, you know, and I think that’s beautiful. And I I genuinely hope. Thank you, Universe. I would love to do that, too. Please. If I can just if I can get my name on that list for like having that happen, that’d be sweet. Yeah. Well, I watch this character and I’m like, I feel like I could see Michael doing all of that. I don’t know why, but I just That’s what I That’s the sense I get. My concern is that I’m gonna be her. What? How? That I’m gonna forget. You’re the Oh, that you’re going to forget. That I’m going to forget. That’s That’s what I’m saying is like that’s that’s the thing that like watching stuff like this makes me really Debbiey’s going to grow a beard and build you a house. Yeah. Yeah. Debbiey’s going to grow a beard and build me a house. But no, no, no. I mean, like later on down the line, like I have because, you know, I I lost a grandfather to Alzheimer’s, you know, I I have a very intimate understanding of like what that does to people and things like that. And so there’s always a part of me that’s worried that that’s the way I’m going to go. Okay. And so watching that and watching things, you know, surrounding patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s just makes me go like, how can I preserve my memory? What can I do to like stay cognizant as long as possible because I don’t I don’t want my loved ones to like watch me slip away before I’m gone. Sudoku. Sudoku. Yeah. I mean, you know, brain puzzles. Just things to keep your brain activated. Like I I thought about going back to math class uh just to challenge my brain in different ways because I’ve heard that that helps. Like language learning basically you you don’t use it, you lose it. Yeah. You know, and so if you just keep using it, you’ll actually stay younger longer. And I think that’s that’s the trick honestly. And you make the habit now so it’s easier as you get older because often times people just don’t use their body or their brain the way they used to and then they start to fall apart deteriorate. Yeah. I mean I can’t just be that Tom Cruz is injecting himself with some kind of syrup. There’s got to be he’s found the fountain of youth. I’m telling you he has found the fountain of youth. But the fountain of youth I think is just being active more than anything is staying active in the ways that like obviously there are sometimes it’s just genetics and it just that’s just how it goes. There’s not a lot you can do about that, but as much as you can, you stay active both mentally and physically, and that will help sustain your life even longer. I mean, look at Clint Eastwood. He’s what is his 90s now and he’s still directing movies. That’s true. The fact that he keeps on doing it is why he could keep on doing. So, I think that that’s my take on it. Not knowing much, not being a science. Yeah. None of this is medical science, but you know, yeah, it’s the keeping active and you know, there is a lot to be said about things, stories from when they were young. The the music thing was really cool. I watched a whole study on like they would give dementia Alzheimer’s patients like iPods loaded up with their music and then they’d play songs and these people would light up and start telling stories of the first time they heard this song in a juke joint or, you know, out to a club with their their like husband and things like that. And it’s so incredible the power that the music had to make them recall. Yeah. You know, so like I I really loved the attention to detail and I talked about it with the piano. Um, but also with the music when they were having the dinner and he got her to remember and things like that and kind of using it to keep her there and keep her grounded in her like the attention to detail that they gave all throughout this film was really good. Like little things that most people wouldn’t think about. Like I’m certain most people wouldn’t be like, “Oh yeah, that that grand piano is going to be out of tune as soon as she plays it.” But I’m thinking about that. I’m that one person that they’re doing all these details for. That’s true. Yeah. I I really enjoyed how they brought this to life. They they brought the era to life, you know, in a subtle way. Yes. Um and the way they showed just that environment, it was very uh inviting and it made me want to like just explore that kind of world cuz that’s largely foreign to me. I grew up in the city. Yeah. You know, um I don’t know what it’s like to live in a small town and all that stuff. And the closest I’ve ever come to that sort of environment was visiting New Orleans. You know, even though New Orleans is there’s a lot of busyness in in New Orleans, but there are parts of it that’s just very quiet and it has that sort of vibe to it. And it’s like even though I went when it was like hot and muggy, it was still cool to like, oh, this is like a very different I like I started to get it cuz every time I saw the South in a movie, I’m like, why would you go there? Like why would you ever? But then I went and I’m like there is something appealing about it and I don’t I don’t know how to explain it. It’s gorgeous. It’s um Yeah. I don’t know. There’s something that’s hard to capture, but it just has this like really calm like go at your own pace sort of rural vibe when you get out of like you know city life. But even in within the cities like it moves at a little bit of a slower pace compared to like LA or New York which are the two like you know go go grind grind grind sort of vibe. You know it’s it’s a place where because it’s like hot and muggy and it has that vibe people take their time things aren’t as urgent I think. Right. is the beauty of it. And then you’ve just got the natural landscape of like the hanging trees and the the creeks and bayou running all through it and stuff like that. It’s it’s a really idyllic place. So, it’s nice to see it shown in like a look at all this beauty here rather than, you know, a lot of the stuff that we’ve been watching recently, especially that’s set in the south is a lot of like tension and political stuff and like the history that that area has. Um, but when you kind of step away from that or or you know just set something there and just use it for the beauty, you’re like, “Oh, this is a really cool part of the country despite and within all of the stuff that went on there.” I think that the Ryan Gosling film I was I was thinking of earlier is called Blue Valentine. I’m not 100% sure of that. It’s just interesting to watch this again. I don’t know what like what goes on when Ryan Gosling makes his decisions for what movies he decides to do, but it was it’s it’s like it feels so similar but in the opposite direction. Opposite direction. Yeah. Because it’s about a marriage falling apart and he loves this woman so much and he’s just trying to save it. And I’m like, whoa, this is it’s it’s like the anti- uh matter version of the notebook, you know, and the thing is it starts out largely similar. That’s what’s fascinating because he’s got that moment. I have to be careful how I talk about this cuz YouTube is silly. Um, you know, when he’s when he’s hanging on the ferris wheel. There’s a moment just like that in Blue Valentine. Exactly like that where he’s like, “Give me a date or I’ll, you know, do something rash.” it it’s he just he has a move like that in Blue Valentine in order to engineer things in a particular direction and um it when you watch the film as a whole it’s like it’s painful it’s like romantic it’s it’s painful you know and and there’s a toxic there’s a toxic element to the whole thing and so here the toxic elements are viewed through the lens of oh that’s sweet and romantic whereas Blue Valentine is more like this is real life and it’s It leaves you with a lot of food for thought. Interesting. I guess it’s a it’s a lesson in like how you frame things in a film and how you frame things like within a script when you’re screenwriting, right? Because like if I’m understanding correctly, basically the same sort of character vibes or like same sort of parallel actions can seem totally different in a different light based on score and like how the characters are reacting and how you’re shooting it, right? these romantic moments can quickly become toxic moments. And I think that’s that’s um an interesting commentary on romance movies as a whole. Um where you know a lot of times I I had a friend of mine in college who was very much looking for the like romance movie moment. Okay. Okay. For like her first kiss, for her first relationship, for like first everything. And um you know it’s like to a certain extent guys were offering her this. Okay. Right. Okay. And we’re being smooth and suave and romantic, but because it didn’t have like underscoring music and things like that, she wasn’t reading it as the same sometimes. Is she autistic? No. No. No. No. No. She’s It just had a very very idealic It just sounds like Love on the Spectrum, honestly. Right. Yeah. Um but no, she just had a very idyllic idea of like what it should look like. And because of that, you know, sometimes you miss the cues because you’re expecting it to come with the like underscoring music and like this big romantic swell and you’re supposed to feel some type of way like it’s like drawing you and you know my heart is in my beating out of my chest when sometimes it’s just like oh these like he he’s nice. Yeah. you know, um, and and so, you know, there’s a certain degree of like, okay, are we elevating like a certain toxic behavior and so that’s why people are looking for more toxic behavior or end up in toxic relationships because it parallels like what we see in the movies, or are you missing the cues because you’re looking for what you see in movies and that’s not necessarily what reality is even if they’re saying all the right words, right? You know? Yeah. Have you seen Love on the Spectrum? I have not. The only reason I was reminded of that is because at least in season one, cuz I haven’t followed up. In season one, you’ll you’ll often find like these guys who are meeting women who seem to fit what they’re looking for, right? And then after the date, they’ll go, “Yeah, it was nice. She was nice, but it didn’t have that spark.” And they’ll say that a lot. And it’s like, “It didn’t have that spark.” And I’m like, “What are you talking about?” Like, yes, it clearly [ย __ย ] did. I I saw it. And but the the thing is because you’re derive even the way they speak they have like American accents because they watch so many American films even though they’re in Australia. I think it’s Australia but like the way movies paint things it teaches your bra it wires your brain to think this is what it should feel like and look like and blah blah blah. And so when you encounter something in real life that is the real life version of it. You don’t know what to do with it. It doesn’t it’s it’s not equating to that. Yeah. It doesn’t feel the same because you got you got this up on a pedestal and like this golden thing and like none of this is I realize I’m coming off as like potentially jaded against romance movies and things like that. Um because there, you know, there are those people who argue that like, oh, we got to stop depicting this stuff in movies or it’s it’s an unrealistic depiction. So, why do you even watch them? I love romance movies. They’re amazing. My wife and I watch them all the time. Romcoms are my favorite. Like, love them. Again, it’s a surprise that I haven’t seen a notebook, but I understand what people are talking about. And what you’re saying is like sometimes you can’t see the forest through the trees because you’re looking for like those notebook moments where he’s hanging from a ferris wheel and like we’re we’re destined to be together and has all the right words and takes you to like a beautiful spot when that’s happening right in front of you, but it just happens to be like their favorite taco place on the corner. and you know, and so you’re having a great time, but because it doesn’t feel like there’s music swelling in the background and things like that, you’re just missing it. Well, I think that with romance films, everything has to be inflated. Yeah. You know, and it’s just I keep dancing around this thought in my head and I’m trying to figure out a way to express it out loud because of YouTube, but you know, you take, shall we say, grown-up films that, you know what I’m saying? everything has to be extremely inflated in those and it’s like it doesn’t make any sense. Like that’s not real life. That doesn’t represent real life in the slightest. But because it’s, you know, it’s a video, it has to be inflated in order to activate you. That’s all. Yeah. And like, you know, we if if it wasn’t as intense and passionate, it wouldn’t be as fun to watch. The notebook wouldn’t be the notebook if it wasn’t this like grand beautiful romance thing. But, you know, I I do appreciate an element in there which is and it’s highly questionable whether or not it was it’s a good thing, but like they showed the montages of them fighting and how they would keep coming back together and like that’s what we do. We fight and we get we you know even the way you said it is like you know you I forgot exactly how he phrased it. Yeah. And you got a two two second rebound time on your feelings being hurt. Yeah. Exactly. And I was like that’s actually cool because it humanizes them more. There was zero element of that in Titanic or or most of these films that you see. It’s like no, like they’re human beings and outside of James Marsden’s being like epically patient, the best dude on the planet. Yeah. Like arguably better than Ryan Gosling. Like honestly, you know, but I I mean obviously I’m championing Ryan Gosling cuz he’s the main character, but let’s step back a second and like look at the profiles, you know, these Mario Kart profiles. His stats are pretty pretty freaking strong. Money. Yeah. Charming. Yeah. Handsome. Hella understanding. Yeah. And just willing to let her, you know, explore it. Paint. So paint. Yeah. Um, no, but I I lost my train of thought. Oh, that. So outside of that, like there you’re getting a lot of real human elements. Even the thing the thing with the mom hiding the letters and all this. I can totally see that happening. Yeah. And she wasn’t just a bad guy. It’s like largely this is predicated on an understanding of stories like this already. But the father uh Rachel McAdam’s father never is really a jerk. No, he’s never a jerk. I kept waiting for it to happen. You know, he’s like this mustache twirling like southern like plantation gentleman or whatever. And I kept waiting for him to like get on board and be like, “You can’t see this boy.” And that was fine. I was also waiting for uh Ryan Gosling’s dad to not approve of the relationship because he’s like, “She’s a rich girl, you’re a poor boy.” Like that that we don’t gel. At no point did this really hit the tropes of romance movies that you see. other than like mom being against the relationship, but even then she came from a really human point of view and it wasn’t like the main thing that was between them and their relationship, right? Like she got in the way initially which resulted in Ryan Gosling breaking up with her and the end of their summer romance, but then he wrote and then they just fell apart and like mom sabotaged a little bit by hiding the letters, but she wasn’t the main antagonist. It was just like fate needed to bring them back together when they were ready. It’s the thing I talked about when they finally reunited is like that moment and the two of them reuniting and being able to have that physical moment together was when it needed to happen because they weren’t necessarily ready at the time when they were in the rundown house during the summer. I have mixed feelings about these the ideas of fate. So I have I’m but yes, for the sake of it’s got to be heightened for the movie. For the sake of the movie. Yes, absolutely. Um, I just I I I think I have that sort of Matrix or Neo knee-jerk reaction because Morpheus goes, “You don’t believe in fate, do you?” And then Neo goes, “Yeah, because I don’t like the idea of I’m not in control of my own destiny.” But the fact of the matter is everything up to the moment of you watching this is a chemical reaction from the big bang. And so, you know what I mean? Like everything’s a chemical reaction. So, do you have any control over your fate? Not really. No. You know, um, it’s so Anyway, I I’m getting lost in there. I I don’t know what other film it was. I’m tempted to look up the IMDb, but I won’t. But I feel like there’s another film of Ryan Gosling where it explores some similar themes. The thought was there for a fleeting second, but there was a moment happening. I’m like, I don’t want to mess up this moment, right? This is not important. I’m going to let it go. Going to put that away. Um, but it feels like Ryan Gosling has explored this in different ways, you know? Um, that’s all I that’s the crux of the thought. I can’t remember what that other film is. And it’s not Barbie. That’s all I know for sure. Like more modern. I don’t remember. Crazy Stupid Love. I’d have to look it up. It’s Oh my god. Crazy Stupid Love. I forgot all about that film. That one’s good. Um anyway, what did you think of the music? The music was beautiful. Like heartbreaking. Um but really, really, I mean, excellently scored. The bit where they don’t turn the page for her at the piano and then she starts playing from memory. That was cool. Was such a good moment. That was such a good touch. I loved that. And just him being able to walk out of the doctor’s office and be like, “No, she’s playing that from memory. by you know mic drop right so good and you know you almost aren’t paying attention to the way they weave it under his checkup scene where you almost don’t notice that the piano’s there until partway through the scene you’re just like oh that’s part of the score and then you’re like wait a minute they were like talking about her playing piano and then just before the music cuts off and it becomes an important moment is when you key in mentally to the fact that it’s her playing piano, right? They don’t show it until after she stops playing. They don’t like give any sort of hint to it. You’re just you key in and it’s perfectly done with subtle timing that you get there right before the movie tells you. Mhm. Which I think is just such a brilliant little moment of storytelling. Oh, La La Land. He has to break up with her. That’s what it was. Did you see La La Land? Yes, I’ve seen La La Land. Yeah. There’s a whole thing here early in the film where he’s got to break up with her. Uh-huh. That’s the end of La La Land. Yes. And it’s the same dude doing the same thing. That’s all I’m saying. Ryan Gosling cannot have a happy relationship. He is enough. He is enough. Okay, you guys. Thanks so much for hanging out. I am Jabby Koi. This is Michael Boo. Peace out.
